First week into law school and I’m already finding mistakes on lovely Lexis and if they can’t get the difference between “it’s” and “its” down, then what hope do I have for the rest of the world?
Brief thoughts on law school? I’ve got to get back to Stepp v. Freeman but I did want to say that my initial impressions are that it will be more challenging with respect to finding a balance of law school and the rest of your life. The Professors are already joking about how we should write down our hobbies because we’ll soon forget them and won’t have time for them. And I certainly see how that can all too easily happen…but it shouldn’t happen. Law school really does need to be viewed as a job rather than as lifestyle because it is this lifestyle that cuts you off from friends who aren’t law student, encourages alcoholism, and quickly from friends and kills any semblance of a ‘normal’ life. What’s worse, though, is that this law school life is quickly, if not already, going to become a bubble world in which all we know is the competition of each other. What we interpret as “normal” will quickly shift.
So, my main goal for law school is to not become a law student or a lawyer. I’ll certainly study as much as I can in order to do as well as I can possibly do for me to be happy with the results. And, truth be told, I do want to see if I have the chops to be the top of the class. I never tried that in high school or college and I want to see if I have what it takes because I think that I do.
Going back to school for a second, I think that two more criticisms that I have — and this is minor for now but I would like to go back to these two issues every now and then to see how my thinking has changed — are that:
1) The cases are viewed just as nothing more than a case. It is completely overlooked and ignored that McGuire was a real person; and
2) There hasn’t been enough discussion of how these cases affect public policy. I’m sure we’ll touch more upon this in future classes and there will be entire classes dedicated to this…but still. It’s something that’s been bothering me a lot lately and I’d like to have a venue to discuss it in further detail. Hence, the site I suppose.
So that’s it, really. I need to get back to case briefing and getting some sleep soon. I’ve found a gym that I’ll be joining this week and I’ll be looking for meetup groups to join. My goal is to do three things a week outside of law school and independent of law students. I’d like to be with a group of people who really don’t care at all if I’ve outlined yet or how much I’m reading into an aspect of a case.
Lots of these lyrics will be coming up on 12minds soon, but for the time being…the things on the playlist recently:
Jaime T – On Holiday M (Holy crap this guy is amazing)
Voxtrot – Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives
Belle & Sebastian – Get Me Away From Me Here, I’m Dying
The National – Fake Empire
Joanna Newsom – Inflammatory Writ
Barenaked Ladies – Light Up My Room
Tegan and Sara – Call It Off
Miek Doughty – Your Misfortune
Down Dexter – Home Schooling
Modest Mouse – Missed The Boat (Very quickly becoming one of my favorite songs of the year. And is that The Shins’ Mercer singing in the backgroud?)
Well, we didn’t need the water, but we just built that good god damn
