There are a couple of bands that, when in a sad mood, I always try to avoid but always end up listening to…
*The National – Start A War
*The Mountain Goats – Get Lonely
Now, I couldn’t really select one song from this album because…well, because the album is amazing. And it’s comprehensive. And it’s amazing when all you want to do is forget the girl, wallow a bit, and then get up at the end of it and move on with your life. It’s such a simultaneously personal and universal album. It’s about the moments, the weeks, days, or months after the break up. It’s the confusion, the rebirth, the falling, the drama…all of it in a neat 42.6 minutes.
*The Shins – A Comet Appears – Because the lyrics are amazing, the music is soothing, and the imagery is startling.
We can blow on our thumbs and posture,
But the lonely is such delicate things,
The wind from a wasp could blow them,
Into the sea,
With stones on their feet,
Lost to the light and the loving we need.
Strange to encounter the notion that breakups happen all the time. That as unique as anything feels…
eh. It’s late. Today was…volatile. But tomorrow has to be better, right? It has to. I think if I stop believing that then things really do stop making sense.
Sleep is overdue.
