This song brings about the strangest bout of déjà vu for me: on the one hand it’s a new DCFC song, but it connects with some ghost of a memory that I can’t quite vocalise. But I know for certain that I’ve heard that song before…or, in signs that it’s a truly great song, that I’ve felt/lived this song before.
And you closed the door on so many men would have loved you more.
The new album, Narrow Stairs, comes out in May and so long as Cath is the standard, then it will certainly be on the ‘to purchase’ list. I find the acoustic version startlingly honest.
Also upcoming on this site (once Crim Law and CivPro finals are done with) is a review of the Weepies’ new album, Hideaway. As with all things Weepies related, it’s adorable and it makes me want to hug puppies and frolic in a field with lots of flowers.
Death Cab For Cutie – Cath
Cath,
She stands with a well-intentioned man.
But she can’t relax with his hands on the small of her back.
As the flashbulbs burst she holds a smile,
Like someone would hold a crying child.
And soon everybody will ask what became of you,
And your heart was dying fast, and you didn’t know what to do.
Cath,
It seems that you live in someone else’s dream.
In a hand-me-down wedding dress
With the things that could have been are repressed.
But you said your vows, and you closed the door
On so many men
Who would have loved you more.
Soon, everybody will ask what became of you,
And your heart was dying fast and you didn’t know what to do.
The whispers that it won’t last roll up and down the pews,
But if their hearts were dying that fast, they’d have done the same as you.
And I’d have done the same as you.
